THE CHALLENGE

Anthology Together Middle East wanted a keynote that could hold a busy, easily distracted conference audience.

Anthology Together Middle East filled its Dubai conference in October 2022 with a full programme of sessions, and delegates had plenty competing for their attention. The organisers wanted one keynote to stand out, leave the room thinking and give people something they could use back at work.

They asked Duncan to speak on mastering effective influence to collaborate more effectively and embrace change fearlessly. It had to feel fun to sit through without ever losing its serious message.

DUNCAN’S SOLUTION

A tailored influence keynote with curated slides, real audience participation and a serious message.

Before the conference, Duncan spoke with the organisers to learn who’d be in the room, how the programme would run and where a keynote could add the most.

He built a 45-minute keynote around influence, collaboration and change, using carefully curated slides and on-stage behavioural psychology demonstrations that got the whole audience taking part. Every idea came with a practical step delegates could try back at work, and the delivery stayed light enough to keep a busy room with him.

THE RESULT

A conference audience that named the session its standout and left with ideas to use.

Breda O’Hara-Davies, an English Language Instructor at United Arab Emirates University, called the keynote the standout event of the conference. She said it engaged an easily distracted audience, mixed serious messages with plenty of fun and left her wishing every presentation could be this good. In the survey, 95% of delegates said they’d recommend Duncan.

The audience survey below shows how the session landed with the people in the room.

THOUGHTS FROM DUNCAN

You can’t influence a distracted room, so I start by making it worth listening to.

A conference audience has sat through plenty of talks by the time I walk on, so I begin by earning attention. Curated slides, a little humour and real participation get people leaning in, and then the serious ideas on influence land. When people enjoy themselves, they remember the message and use it.

The Anthology Together crowd in Dubai were curious, generous and quick to join in, and I’d love to work with them again.
