OUTCOME 1

One shared way to work

Delegates from across the EPC community left with a shared picture of how proactive teams work together.

OUTCOME 2

Proactive by default

Teams began treating early action as part of the job, not a heroic extra when a project starts to wobble.

OUTCOME 3

Actions to take home

Practical tools and workshop actions they could take straight back to their own teams and start using.

THE CHALLENGE

EnviroCompétences needed its EPC community working as one proactive team.

Projects in engineering, procurement and construction rarely forgive late surprises, yet the people delivering them often work in separate firms and disciplines, meeting only when something’s gone wrong. The EPC group’s conference theme, Unlocking Excellence, set out to change that.

The volunteer board asked Duncan to run a keynote and a workshop for around 60 delegates. They wanted a speaker who’d listen first, tailor everything to their challenges and leave the group with practical tools for proactive teamwork.

DUNCAN’S SOLUTION

A tailored teams keynote and workshop that turned proactive teamwork into next steps.

Before the conference, Duncan spoke with the organisers to learn how EPC teams hand work over, where projects stall and what proactive teamwork should look like on site and between projects.

He opened with a 45-minute keynote built on marginal gains, shared ownership and on-stage behavioural psychology demonstrations, then led a 60-minute workshop where each table mapped one action to take back to its own team.

THE RESULT

A conference that left teams with practical tools for proactive teamwork.

EnviroCompétences reported overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, who said the session gave them practical tools and strategies for proactive teamwork, delivered in a relatable way. The workshop added actionable steps to carry the lessons into lasting change within their teams. In the survey, 98% of delegates said they’d recommend Duncan.

The audience survey below shows how the session landed with the people in the room.

THOUGHTS FROM DUNCAN

Teams turn proactive when they know what to do next, not just why it matters.

Most engineers and project managers already care about doing things early. What stops them is friction: unclear handovers, unspoken assumptions and nobody owning the small fix. So I pair every idea with a small, concrete step, then let the room work out its own version in the workshop, because people back what they help build.

The EPC group were generous, curious and great company, and I’d love to work with them again.
