General Information About The City:

Ankara was founded as the new capital of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. The founder of modern-day Turkey Kemal Ataturk Mehmet decided to have this more central location, providing transportation links by rail to the west and east Anatolia, as well as north Syria and Iraq as the new capital for the emergent nation. Today Ankara serves as an economic centre for the North-eastern Anatolia region as well as housing the seat of the Turkish government. Turkey’s capital has grown tremendously since 1990 and has risen to become one of the largest megacities in Europe and Central Asia. Furthermore, it stands out for its distinctive culture and cuisine. Through centuries of passing civilizations, it has amalgamated into its unique identity that is a blend of Greek, Roman, Persian, and of course the Turkish culture itself.

More recently, with the rise of Turkey as a technological hub for new research, Ankara has led the way. It houses several technological parks such as the Ankara University Technopolis which offers 15,000m2 of space with spaces big enough to host conferences of over 400 people. It also hosts over a hundred technological companies, fast becoming one of Europe’s most important centres of technological innovation. The city is a massive advantage since it has a current in-flow of a young population that is graduating from prestigious universities located in Ankara, such as the Ankara University, Bilkent University, Hacettepe Üniversitesi, and many others.

Ankara as a Conference and Events City:

Ankara is in a fantastic location just 2 hours from Istanbul, allowing international delegates to explore travel to most of the must-go locations in Turkey before or after the conference.

Given its suitable environment, and excellent availability of international standard services it is gaining traction as a highly recommended site for international conferences. Ankara is set to hold a myriad of international conventions and conferences in 2021 including the International Conference on Robotics, Aeronautics, Mechanics and Mechatronics, International Conference on Automobile & Mechanical Engineering, International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA), Military Radar & Border Security Summit, as well as the International Turkish Russian World Congress on Academic Research (UTRAK) at the prestigious Gazi University, Ankara.

Thus, the city is leading the world in becoming a focal point for major stakeholders to converge, in a plethora of fields from Education, Business, Military, Strategy and Automobile to many more. It can be aptly said that the recent technological turnaround of modern-day turkey, as a leading innovator and global leader, can be highly attributed to such conferences where it has provided leaders from around the world an excellent opportunity to converge and share ideas.

Ankara Sights and Attractions for Conference Delegates:

Stepping into Ankara, you can almost smell the centuries of history that have passed through this city. The interspersed Ottoman and Greek structures, set against a backdrop of dazzling skyscrapers make for an excellent contrast into how far this city has travelled from the ancient nomadic tribes that once settled here thousands of years ago. To appreciate this history more, it’s recommended that you start your day trip with a quick tour of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. And if you’re a modern history geek, then you can’t miss out on the Anitkabir; the museum dedicated to the historic founder of the modern-day Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Meeting planners can take some time off and go off on a day trip nearby to visit the historical Hittite remains from the bronze age. Take a trip down memory lane and visit Ankara’s picturesque citadel and feel transported to the days of the Byzantine Empire.  Or you can simply eat your way through Ankara’s many street food options such as the delicious İşkembecisi and Besni Güllac and a wide variety of Turkish sweets making for a very tasty trip indeed.

Ankara in many ways is a historic city but has become the most significant city of Turkey, it has slowly evolved into a modern city that has carefully developed while preserving its ancient identity.
