Duncan Stevens Gives NAFA's Fleet Leaders a New Way to Lead Change at I&E 2026

With Duncan Stevens, behavioural psychologist, keynote speaker and best-selling author

"The session was interactive, practical, and honestly just made you think differently about leadership and change. He digs into why people naturally resist change and how, as leaders, we can shift that by changing how people think and feel, not just what we ask them to do. It really challenges your perspective in a good way and gives you tools you can actually use."
Mary Beth Micucci
Chief Learning Officer at NAFA Fleet Management Association

OUTCOME 1

Fleet leaders aligned

Fleet professionals at I&E 2026 left with a shared way to talk about change and where to lead it next.

OUTCOME 2

Resistance reframed

People stopped asking why teams resist change and started asking how to shift what those teams think and feel.

OUTCOME 3

Lessons that will last

Interactive exercises gave delegates practical tools they could use with their own teams the very next day.

THE CHALLENGE

NAFA wanted its fleet leaders ready to lead people through change, not just manage it.

Fleet managers spend their days keeping vehicles moving, and lately the ground under them has been shifting too. NAFA’s I&E 2026 conference brought fleet professionals together while the industry wrestled with new technology, tighter budgets and rising expectations.

NAFA’s education team asked Duncan to speak on leadership and change. They wanted delegates to understand why people naturally resist it, and to leave with practical tools they could use with their own teams straight away.

DUNCAN’S SOLUTION

An interactive change session that showed leaders how to shift the way people think and feel.

Before the conference, Duncan spoke with NAFA’s education team to learn who’d be in the room, what fleet leaders were facing and what they’d want to try back at work.

He built a 50-minute keynote around why people resist change and how leaders can shift it, using on-stage behavioural psychology demonstrations and interactive exercises to make each idea land. Every idea came with a tool delegates could use straight away.

THE RESULT

Delegates who left thinking differently about change and holding tools they could use.

Mary Beth Micucci, NAFA’s Chief Learning Officer, said the session was interactive and practical and made her think differently about leadership and change. She said it explained why people naturally resist change and gave leaders tools they could use, and that it stays with you afterwards. In the survey, 98% of delegates said they’d recommend Duncan.

The audience survey below shows how the session landed with the people in the room.

THOUGHTS FROM DUNCAN

People don’t need more instructions about change. They need a reason to see it differently.

Fleet leaders are practical people, so I skipped the theory and made every idea something they could try. Once you explain why people resist change, leaders stop taking it personally. Then it’s far easier to shift how their teams think and feel, which does more than any instruction can. I love a session where the room joins in, and this one did.

The NAFA delegates were open, curious and generous with their attention, and I’d love to work with them again.
